Huangsha Aquatic Product Trading Market = Fresh Seafood Market
Guangzhou is a city surrounded by water. As a port city with the Pearl River running through it, you can expect seafood to play a part in it’s cuisine. One of the seafood market I’ve been to is the Huangsha Aquatic Product Trading Market. While this sounds like quite a mouth full, I assure you that it’s a real wholesale market where both restaurants and regular folks can purchase a variety of fresh seafood. Once you’ve purchased your seafood, you can bring it to one of the many restaurants located within the market to have them cook it in any way you like. It’s a great lunch/dinner spot. Given the variety of seafood available, I would recommend walking around the whole market before buying anything. Normally, there’s no listed price and you definitely should haggle before settling on a price.
The market is conveniently located beside Shamian Island so you can visit both places in one day. If you’re heading to the market first, you can take the metro to Huangsha Station (黄沙站) using Line 1 and exit through Exit D. You should visit Huangsha Aquatic Product Tradition Market soon because it’s rumoured to be torned down and move. This rumour has been going on for about a year now so it’s hard to pinpoint when this might happen but I will provide an update when I get it.
My family took me to Huangsha Aquatic Product Trading Market to buy seafood to bring upstairs to a restaurant for dinner. Our family (especially me) loves crabs and that is reflected in the meal. I want to highlight the fact that you can get sashimi in Guangzhou and have the seafood turned into sashimi but I wouldn’t recommend it. A lot of the seafood is freshwater and parasites is a constant concern. My family ordered it and I did have one shrimp to appease them. It was very sweet and I didn’t get sick, but if you are going to try this, you are doing so at your own risk.
